The number of workers filing initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits for the week ending Aug. 8 dipped below one million for the first time since March, falling to 963,000, down 228,000 from 1,191,000 the previous week, the U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday.
The previous week's figure had been revised upward by 5,000.
In New York, initial claims tumbled by 21,905 to 52,092 from 73,997 the previous week.

New US jobless claims for the week that ended Saturday totaled 963,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That came in below the consensus economist estimate of 1.1 million.
This week's report brought total filings over a 21-week period to more than 56 million.
Continuing claims, the aggregate total of people receiving unemployment benefits, totaled 15.5 million for the week that ended August 1.
