US weekly jobless claims hit 6.6 million, extending a record streak as coronavirus layoffs continue

The Labor Department reported Thursday that 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment insurance in the week that ended April 4.
That brings the three-week total to roughly 16.8 million unemployment filings, a record for a period of that length.
The figure comes after a record 10 million Americans filed for unemployment insurance in the last two weeks of March amid a sudden rash of coronavirus-induced layoffs.
The US is bracing for a recession and a huge jump in the unemployment rate as the coronavirus pandemic continues.
