WASHINGTON - A Republican lawmaker advising President Donald Trump said he is encouraging the president to reopen the government for several weeks to continue negotiating with Democrats over funding for a U.S.-Mexico border wall before the president takes the more drastic step of declaring a national emergency.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is one of President Donald Trump's closest allies in Congress, urged the commander in chief to reopen the government for a few weeks in order to keep negotiating his border wall. Once he does that, and if there is no progress, then the president should go ahead with his plan to declare a national emergency, he said. “I would urge him to open up the government for a short period of time, like three weeks, before he pulls the plug.
