The FDA has approved the first new treatment for Alzheimer's disease in nearly two decades - bucking the advice of its own expert advisory panel, which last fall said there was not enough evidence to prove the drug works.
Unlike existing treatments, the new drug - called aducanumab - aims to slow the brain's deterioration instead of just treating the symptoms of the disease. But while the drug appeared to slow progression of the disease in one late-stage trial, a companion study found it to be no better than placebo.
