US traded mixed on Thursday as investors mulled the Labor Department's latest jobless-claims report and fresh US-China tensions.
2.1 million Americans filed for unemployment during the week ended on Saturday, according to a Thursday release. The reading matched economist estimates and pushed the metric's 10-week total to 40.7 million.

The number of workers filing initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits totaled 2.123 million for the week ending May 23, the U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday. That's down 323,000 from the previous week's 2.466 million, which was revised upward by 8,000 from 2.438 million.
In New York, workers filed 192,193 claims, down 31,769 from 223,962 the previous week.
The state Labor Department was expected to provide a county-by-county breakdown later Thursday.
