Some Maryland politicians, candidates for governor vow to strengthen state abortion laws in wake of Roe decision

Many top-level political officials or candidates in Maryland reacted Friday to the overturning of Roe v. Wade by calling for legislative changes or increased funding for existing or new abortion services in a state that has already taken progressive measures to support abortion rights.

Abortion bans that were put on the books in some states in the event Roe v. Wade was overturned started automatically going into effect Friday, while clinics elsewhere - including Alabama, Texas and West Virginia - stopped performing abortions for fear of prosecution, sending women away in tears.
