Democrats make modest gains on Beacon Hill, pick up seat in House, Senate

Massachusetts Democrats looking to sweep up seats in a tailwind off the national election made only modest gains on Beacon Hill in Tuesday's general election as Republicans - for the most part - defended their numbers.
Democrats picked up a single seat in both the state House and Senate, but in a state that has for decades held a large Democratic supermajority, GOP State Party Chairman Jim Lyons said he's glad the damage stopped there.
