On August 5, two months after protests against racial injustice had kicked off around the country, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds held a signing ceremony for a new executive order-one that would grant people who had been incarcerated for a felony the right to vote upon completing their sentences.
“Quite simply, when someone serves their sentence and pays the price our justice system has set for their crimes,” Reynolds said, speaking in front of masked community leaders in her office at the state capitol, “they should have their right to vote restored, automatically, plain and simple.”
