Rand Paul blocks funding for 9/11 victims over hypocritical budget concerns

Sen. Rand Paul blocked an attempt by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Wednesday to fast-track a bill that would extend compensation for victims of the September 11th attacks.
Paul expressed concerns that Gillibrand's attempt to pass the measure using unanimous consent - meaning a bill is approved so long as no senator objects - did not take into consideration the need to offset that funding elsewhere.

Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York is criticizing Paul for playing what she calls "political games."
The bill has 73 co-sponsors in the Senate and easily passed the House last week.
Gillibrand says 9/11 first...

Democrat Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand accused Republicans of playing “political games” after a GOP senator Wednesday blocked her effort to permanently fund the 9/11 victim compensation. Gillibrand attempted to pass the legislation by voice vote but was blocked by GOP Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who cited costs and cited concerns about its effect on the budget. “Enough of the political games,” Gillibrand said. Under Senate rules, it takes only one senator to block a voice vote. “Our 9/11 first responders and the entire nation are watching to see if this body actually cares. Do we care about the...
