Albany County measure to prevent employees from hiring relatives passes

ALBANY - Despite a local law that has languished in committee for nearly two years that would prevent hiring elected officials' relatives without scrutiny, county legislators instead opted for a measure that prevents county employees from hiring their relatives.
Resolution 523, introduced last month by Albany County Democrats Richard Touchette and Andrew Joyce, the legislature's chairman, prohibits any county employee from participating in the decision to “appoint, hire, promote, discipline, or discharge a relative” for any position in the county or on a county board.
It was approved by legislators Thursday in a 32-3 vote, but a more transparent process to curb nepotism in the county hiring practices introduced by Colonie Republican Todd Drake in early 2018 failed, 22-13.
